About The Woodlands Diversion

The Woodlands Diversion, founded in 2023, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to enriching the fine arts culture of The Woodlands and surrounding areas through immersive, collaborative arts experiences.

Classical music has long been anchored in the works of European composers from centuries past - an enduring legacy that continues to shape our cultural landscape. Yet, even as we honor this storied tradition, we believe that the vitality of the arts depends on opening the stage to a broader chorus of voices. Our programming extends beyond the familiar canon to spotlight living composers, women, artists of color, and LGBTQ+ voices - perspectives that have too often been relegated to the margins but are indispensable to the art form’s evolution.

For us, innovation is not a luxury - it is a necessity. Each performance is an invitation to discovery, where the classical and the contemporary intertwine, where the known meets the unexpected. We draw on film, movement, and visual art to create immersive experiences designed not only to be heard but to be felt—deeply, viscerally. The result is programming that is intellectually engaging, emotionally resonant, and accessible to seasoned aficionados and curious newcomers alike.

Art, we believe, should not belong to the few. It must live in the hearts of many. That’s why we are committed to widening the circle - offering performances at accessible price points, fostering artistic curiosity in young people, and creating pathways for emerging talents to thrive. Through grants, performances, and community partnerships, we work to nurture the next generation of creators - and the next generation of listeners.

At The Woodlands Diversion, we invite you to imagine what the arts can become when tradition is not preserved in amber, but carried forward into new, uncharted light.

The Woodlands Diversion Board of Directors

  • Artistic Director & Founder

Matthew (“Matt”) is a pianist and composer who embodies a new vision for classical music—one in which virtuosity is not an end in itself, but a means to engage broader cultural questions. His artistic lineage, shaped through intensive study with luminaries such as Abbey Simon, Carlisle Floyd, James Dick, and Anton Nel, reflects a careful tension between reverence for classical tradition and a restless pursuit of new musical frontiers. Matt’s performances, including his 2022 debut at Carnegie Hall, reveal not only technical command but also a rare depth of emotional insight—music that is as intellectually rigorous as it is profoundly human.

As both composer and Artistic Director of The Woodlands Diversion, Matt draws from literature, nature, and personal reflection to craft works that explore the intersection of individual story and shared human experience. His artistic mission also embraces a broader vision for the future of classical music—one that welcomes fresh perspectives and voices that have too often been left at the margins. Through thoughtful programming and a commitment to commissioning new works, Matt seeks to gently expand the boundaries of the tradition while honoring its enduring legacy.

In this way, Matt offers not only the precision and refinement of a world-class pianist but also the vision of an artist attuned to the urgencies of the present. His career stands as a testament to the idea that classical music—without abandoning its artistic rigor—can become more inclusive, more expansive, and ultimately more alive.
